THE INFANT JESUS – SANTO NIÑO INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE  -14th January

Who is the Infant Jesus?

In Catholic devotion, the Infant Jesus refers to Jesus Christ in His childhood — the beloved “Child Jesus”. This devotion highlights both:

  • The mystery of the Incarnation — God becoming truly human, beginning as a baby born in Bethlehem.
  • Childlike trust and simplicity — the way Jesus invites us to approach Him with humble faith and confidence.

Infant Jesus of Prague

One of the most famous Catholic devotions to the Child Jesus is the Infant Jesus of Prague, a statue of the Christ Child dressed regally and venerated since the 17th century. It reminds the faithful that:

  • Jesus is King of Heaven and Earth, even as a child.
  • He blesses those who trust Him with simplicity and faith.
  • The statue’s raised hand blessing and the globe in His left hand symbolize His universal kingship and loving care over the world.

Many Catholics pray novenas and chaplets to the Infant Jesus, asking for help, peace, mercy, and trust that God provides — especially through the Child’s humble image.

Spiritual Meaning

The devotion to the Infant Jesus isn’t just about a statue — it’s about inviting us to:

  • See God’s love and tenderness in His childhood.
  • Grow in childlike faith, trust, and confidence in God’s care.
  • Remember that greatness in God’s kingdom often comes through humility and simplicity.

Catholics around the world celebrate these devotions with Masses, novenas, family prayers, and home enthronement of an image or statue of the Infant Jesus.

Thanksgiving to the Infant Jesus

I prostrate myself before Thy holy image, O most gracious Infant Jesus, to offer Thee my most fervent thanks for the blessings Thou hast bestowed upon me. I shall incessantly praise Thine ineffable mercy and confess that Thou alone art my God, my Helper and my Protector. Henceforth my entire confidence shall be placed in Thee! Everywhere I shall proclaim aloud Thy mercy and generosity, so that Thy great love and the great deeds which Thou dost perform through this miraculous image may be acknowledged by all. May devotion to Thy Holy Infancy increase more and more in the hearts of all Christians, and may all who experience Thine assistance persevere with me in showing unceasing gratitude to Thy most holy infancy, to which be praise and glory forever. Amen.

Prayer to Santo Niño

O Señor Santo Niño, You are our king and our god, we worship you, you are our strong Defender, we turn to you; You are the Patron of Cebu and Philippines, we come to you; You have made extraordinary wonders. Through your miraculous Image in these chosen islands, remember us. Look down at this poor soul that comes to You for help. Lead us with your wisdom, discipline us with Your Truth, console us with Your Tenderness, protect us with Your Might.

We consecrate today our thoughts to You, only with You shall they be occupied; our words, only of you shall they speak; our sufferings, that we may endure them for your sake. We beg You, Señor Santo Niño, illumine our understanding, kindle our will, cleanse our body, sanctify our soul. We wish what you wish, because you wish, as you wish, as long as you wish.

Grant us, Señor Santo Niño, that we may feel love toward You, be strict toward ourselves, be zealous toward our fellowmen, and rightly despise the things of the world. Help us to overcome sensuality with strict discipline, avariciousness with generosity, anger with gentleness, indolence with zealous industry. Make us wise in counsel, courageous in danger, patient in adversity, humble in prosperity.

Teach us, dear Santo Niño, how worthless is the world, how sublime is heaven, how brief is time, how long is eternity. Grant us, lastly, that we may remember You, adore You, and serve You here on earth that we may be happy with You forever and ever in Heaven. Amen.

Novena to the Infant Jesus

O DEAREST JESUS, tenderly loving us, Thy greatest joy is to dwell among us and to bestow Thy blessing upon us! So many who turned with confidence to Thee have received graces and had their petitions granted. Behold me: in spirit I kneel before Thy miraculous image on Thine altar in Prague and lay open my heart to Thee, with its prayers, petitions and hopes. Especially the affair of (Name your request) do I enclose in Thy loving Heart.

Govern me and do with me and mine according to Thy holy will, for I know that in Thy Divine wisdom and love Thou wilt ordain everything for the best.

Almighty gracious Infant Jesus, do not withdraw Thy hand from us, but protect and bless us forever.

I pray Thee, sweetest Infant, in the name of Thy Blessed Mother Mary, who cared for Thee with such tenderness, and by the great reverence with which St. Joseph carried Thee in his arms, comfort me and grant my petition, that I may bless and thank Thee forever with all my heart. Amen.
