Timothy had a Greek father and a Jewish mother. Being the product of a “mixed” marriage, he was considered illegitimate by the Jews. Timothy was a convert of Paul around the year 47 and later joined him in his apostolic work. He was with Paul at the founding of the Church in Corinth. During the 15 years he worked with Paul, he became one of his most faithful and trusted friends. He was sent on difficult missions by Paul. At some period Timothy himself was in prison. Paul installed him as his representative at the Church of Ephesus.
Titus has the distinction of being a close friend and disciple of Paul as well as a fellow missionary. He was Greek, apparently from Antioch. Even though Titus was a Gentile, Paul would not let him be forced to undergo circumcision at Jerusalem. Titus is seen as a peacemaker, administrator, great friend. When Paul was having trouble with the community at Corinth, Titus was the bearer of Paul’s severe letter and was successful in smoothing things out.
Saints Timothy and Titus: Overview
Timothy and Titus were trusted co‑workers of Paul who helped establish and strengthen early Christian communities. Both received personal letters from Paul—1 & 2 Timothy and Titus—which guide Church leadership to this day.
Lives of the Two Saints
Timothy
- Mixed heritage: Jewish mother (Eunice) and Greek father.
- Converted by Paul around 47 AD and joined him on missionary journeys.
- Close collaborator: Present at the founding of the Church in Corinth and sent on difficult missions to troubled communities.
- Imprisoned at some point (mentioned in Hebrews 13:23).
- Bishop of Ephesus: Appointed by Paul to lead the church there.
- Martyrdom: Tradition says he was killed in Ephesus protesting pagan rituals.
- Personality: Young, sometimes timid, needing encouragement from Paul (e.g., 1 Tim 5:23).
Titus
- Gentile convert: A Greek, likely from Antioch.
- Close friend and disciple of Paul: Called “my true child in our common faith”.
- Peacemaker: Successfully reconciled the troubled Corinthian community.
- Bishop of Crete: Tasked with organizing the church, correcting abuses, and appointing presbyters.
- Death: Tradition says he died peacefully at an advanced age in Crete.
Their Role in the New Testament
- Pastoral Epistles:
- 1 & 2 Timothy — guidance for leadership, doctrine, and perseverance.
- Titus — instructions for organizing the Church in Crete.
- These letters reveal Paul’s deep affection and trust for both men.

well known for your gentleness,
you were a most faithful disciple of
Saint Paul, and like him,

please obtain relief for
(name of sufferer),
if it be God’s will.
Amen.

Prayer to Saint Timothy
Saint Timothy, pray for me that I, too,
may one day glorify the Blessed Trinity
in heaven.
Obtain for me your lively faith,
that I may consider all persons,
things, and events in the light
of almighty God.
Pray, that I may be generous in making
sacrifices of temporal things to promote
my eternal interests, as you so wisely did.
Set me on fire with a love for Jesus,
that I may thirst for His sacraments
and burn with zeal for the spread
of His kingdom.
By your powerful intercession,
help me in the performance
of my duties to God, myself
and all the world.
Win for me the virtue of purity
and a great confidence in the Blessed Virgin.
Protect me this day, and every day of my life.
Keep me from mortal sin.

O God, you endowed your holy bishop Titus with the glory of apostolic virtues; grant that through his merits and prayers we may live upright and godly lives in this world, and come to our heavenly home. Prayer to Sts. Timothy and Titus
God Our Father, Saints Timothy and Titus were Saint Paul’s disciples, as well as his close personal friends and partners in evangelization. I offer up to You my calling to share the salvation of Jesus. Help me to grow in courage to evangelize boldly and confidently. Bring into my life friends who will partner with me in spreading the Good News, and bless for this purpose the friends I already have. Help us to be Christ’s witnesses by the way we love and serve each other. Teach us to show by our own lives the way to holiness. Bless us and the people who will hear and see our testimony. Saints Timothy and Titus, pray for us. Amen.
Prayer to Sts. Timothy and Titus
