Who he was
- Born: c. 560 in Cartagena, Spain
- Died: April 4, 636
- Role: Archbishop of Seville for over 30 years
- Era: Early Middle Ages (when learning in Europe was hanging by a thread)
Why he matters
St. Isidore was basically the great organizer of knowledge of his time. His most famous work, Etymologiae, was a massive encyclopedia covering:

- Science & medicine

- Mathematics
- Agriculture
- Music
For centuries, it was the reference book in monasteries and schools across Europe. Without it, a lot of classical knowledge might’ve been lost.

Almighty and Eternal God,
You created us in Your image and called us to seek all that is good, true and beautiful.
Through the intercession of Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor, help us as we journey through the Internet to direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to You.
Help us to treat all those we encounter online with charity, patience, and respect.
Grant us the wisdom to ensure that our digital creations and communications reflect all that we believe and the Gospel Values that we share.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Help us to imitate the devotion to You he showed throughout his life, from the time he was a young boy in a holy family. St. Isidore of Seville, we know little about your early life. But multiple people in your family came to be recognized as saints. As a member of this holy family, you began on the path to serving God. Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served! You continued on the path of holy service to God for the rest of your life. You became an archbishop and helped unite the Church in a time of great conflict. Pray for me, that I may be as devoted a servant of God as you were. Pray that I may be eager to devote my life to God.

St. Isidore of Seville, you studied under the guidance of your older brother, St. Leander, during your youth. Though your early school experience was very harsh, you grew to love learning. Please bring my petitions before the throne of God! You understood the importance of education. As an archbishop, you promoted the study of theology, grammar, history, geography, and other subjects. You worked to help lead your people closer to God through study. Pray for me, that I may always be eager to learn more about God. Pray that I may be as eager to serve God as you were.

St. Isidore of Seville, there were many divisions in the Church when you served as archbishop. You worked hard to unite the Church and to defeat heresy, out of love for God. Please bring my petitions before God Whom you loved so dearly! You were able to get rid of the Arian heresy almost entirely in your area. You were also effective in halting the spread of the Acephali Heresy shortly after it began. Pray for me, that I may always be as willing to fight for and defend the truth as you were. Pray that I may never waver in my devotion to the true teachings of God.

You promoted the establishment of more seminaries, and you promoted more learning in all subject areas. Pray for me, that I may never tire of learning more about God in my life. St. Isidore of Seville, your virtuous care for the poor became apparent near the time of your death. Before your death when you were nearly eighty years old, your home was filled with poor people. You distributed alms to them, out of love for God. Please continue to bring my petitions before the throne of God! In your great love for God and charity towards your brothers and sisters in Christ, you gave away all of your possessions to the poor before you died. Pray for me, that I may grow in charity towards those in need. Pray that I may never miss the opportunity to serve God through charity towards the poor.

Here we are before thee, O Holy Ghost. We feel the burden of our infirmities, but we are united all together in Thy name: come to us, help us, enter into our hearts: teach us what we should do, the path to follow, do for us what Thou askest us to do. Be the only one to propose and guide our decisions, because only Thou, with the Father and the Son, hast a name that is glorious and holy. Do not allow us to offend justice, Thou, who lovest order and peace, let not ignorance lead us astray, Let not human sympathy bias us, do not let people or office influence us. Keep us intimately close to Thee with the gift of Thy Grace, so that we may be only one thing with Thee, and nothing may separate us from the Truth. Gathered in Thy Holy Name, may we be good and firm, so that all we do may be in one accord with Thee, awaiting that the faithful fulfilment of our duty may lead us to the eternal good.
