Transfiguration of the Lord
The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event where Jesus Christ took three of his disciples, Peter, James and John, upon Mount Tabor, where Moses and Elijah appeared and Jesus was transfigured, his face and clothes becoming dazzlingly bright. The festival celebrates the revelation of the eternal glory of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus is then called “Son” by the voice of God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus.
A church first raised at Mount Tabor in the fourth century was dedicated on August 6. The Feast of Transfiguration was fixed as August 6 by Pope Calixtus III in 1457 as a thank offering for the victory over the Turks at Belgrade on that day in 1456.
Transfiguration of the Lord – 6th August
“This is my Son, the Beloved… listen to him!”
“The Lord was transfigured, not to change His nature, but to reveal it to us, that we might be transformed by His grace into His likeness.”
“Christ manifested to His disciples the glory of His divinity, so that they might be strengthened in faith and prepared for the trials of the Passion.”
COLLECT PRAYER
O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son, we may merit to become co-heirs with him. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Transfiguration prayer
On the mountain you were transfigured, O Christ God, And your disciples beheld your glory as far as they were able So that when they would behold You crucified, They would understand that Your suffering was voluntary, And would proclaim to the world, That You are truly the radiance of the Father.
Collect
Father in heaven,
whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured
before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain,
and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem:
give us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross
that in the world to come we may see him as he is;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Prayer for the feast of the Transfiguration
You were transfigured on the Mountain, O Christ God, showing Your Disciples as much of Your glory as they could hold. Let Your eternal light shine also upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Giver of Light, glory to You.
Prayers for the Transfiguration of the Lord
Living Word and shining Sun of God,
in your presence we see the face of holiness.
Overshadow us with your power and grace,
so that we may keep your commandments
and speak your truth with courage and love;
all for the dazzling glory of your holy name.
Amen.
Prayers for the Transfiguration of the Lord
Great God of dazzling beauty
and overshadowing majesty,
in Jesus Christ, your beloved Son,
we glimpse the image of your glory.
Teach us to listen to him
so that we may hear your voice
and follow your holy way;
through Jesus Christ our Savior.
Amen.
A PRAYER FOR ‘THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD JESUS’
At the Transfiguration, Father, You showed
Jesus in glory, a glimpse of what His disciples
would see in His risen life.
Bless us in our humanity,
with an awareness of Your presence,
leading us to share in Your divine life
even in our daily struggle.
Help us to deepen
our knowledge of the Law and the Prophets,
channels of Your grace throughout history,
and signposts for our journey.
Amen.
Prayer for the Feast of the Transfiguration
O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD – An Act of Hope
O my God,
trusting in Your promises
and because You are faithful,
powerful and merciful,
I hope, through the merits of Jesus Christ,
for the pardon of my sins,
final perseverance and the blessed glory of Heaven.
Amen.
The Transfiguration of the Lord is a major event in the life of Jesus Christ, celebrated by many Christian traditions, especially on August 6.
What Is the Transfiguration?
The Transfiguration refers to the moment when Jesus was transformed in glory before the eyes of three of His apostles: Peter, James, and John. It is recorded in the Gospels:
- Matthew 17:1–8
- Mark 9:2–8
- Luke 9:28–36
What Happened?
Jesus took the three apostles up a high mountain (traditionally believed to be Mount Tabor). There:
- His face shone like the sun
- His clothes became dazzling white
- Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets) appeared and talked with Him
- A bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said:
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!”
— Matthew 17:5
Theological Significance
- Reveals Jesus’ divinity before His Passion
- Connects the Old Covenant (Moses & Elijah) with the New Covenant (Jesus)
- Strengthens the apostles’ faith in preparation for His coming suffering and death
- Foreshadows the Resurrection and the glorification of all who follow Christ
Feast of the Transfiguration (August 6)
- A Feast Day in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, and others
- In Catholic liturgy, it was made universal by Pope Callixtus III in 1457, after the victory at the Siege of Belgrade
