Canonization of Carlo Acutis

Canonization on 7th September 2025

canonization on divine mercyPope Leo XIV  has officially announced that Blessed Carlo Acutis will be canonized during the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year 2025. The canonization Mass is expected to take place on Sunday, September 7th 2025 in St. Peter’s Square.Carlo Acutis, born in 1991, will become the first millennial saint of the Catholic Church. Known for his devotion to the Eucharist and his use of technology for evangelization, Acutis created a website cataloging Eucharistic miracles worldwide before his death from leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15. In October 2006, when he was 15 years old, Acutis fell ill with what his parents initially believed was the flu. When his symptoms worsened, he was taken to a hospital in Milan, where he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and offered his sufferings to Pope Benedict XVI and the Church. He was transferred to a hospital in Monza, Italy, and within a few days he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma and was taken to the intensive care unit where he underwent a blood-cleansing treatment. He was pronounced brain-dead on 11 October. Acutis died the next day, 12 October 2006, at 6:45 p.m. His parents brought his body home, where people came for four days to pay their last respects. A crowd of strangers attended his funeral, including young people who had abandoned the Church and those who returned for a memorial Mass three months later. Initially buried in a cemetery in the village of Ternengo, his body was reburied in January 2007 in Assisi, which he had requested because of his devotion to St. Francis of Assisi. On 6 April 2019, his body was brought to the Sanctuary of the Spoliation and venerated at its final resting place. In memory of Acutis, Bishops Raffaello Martinelli and Angelo Comastri have helped to organize a traveling photo exhibition of all the Eucharistic miracle sites. It has since traveled to dozens of different countries across five continents. The preface to the print version of the exhibit was written by Cardinal Angelo Comastri and has been translated into 18 languages. It has traveled to more than 10,000 places, including churches, congressional palaces, youth clubs, and welcome centers.

Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo’s wealthy parents were not particularly religious. Upon receiving his first communion at age seven, Carlo became a frequent communicant, At school Carlo tried to comfort friends whose parents were undergoing divorce, as well as stepping in to defend disabled students from bullies. After school hours he volunteered his time with the city’s homeless and destitute. Considered a computer geek by some, Carlo spent four years creating a website dedicated to cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle around the world. Diagnosed with leukaemia, Carlo offered his sufferings to God for the intentions of the sitting pope—Benedict XVI—and the entire Church. His long-time desire to visit as many sites of Eucharistic miracles as possible was cut short by his illness. Carlo died in 2006 and was beatified in 2020.
