Patronage
Because of the nature of her suffering, Apollonia is the patron saint of:

St. Apollonia, who died in the year 249, was martyred for not renouncing her faith during the reign of Emperor Philip. The account of the life of St. Apollonia was written by St. Dionysius to Fabian, Bishop of Antioch. Apollonia had all her teeth knocked out after being hit in the face by a Christian persecutor under the reign of Emperor Philip. For this reason, she is popularly regarded as the patroness of dentistry and those suffering from toothache or other dental problems. After she was threatened with fire unless she renounced her faith, Apollonia jumped into the flames voluntarily. She is considered the patron of dental diseases and is often invoked by those with toothaches. Ancient art depicts her with a golden tooth at the end of her necklace. Also in art, she is seen with pincers holding a tooth.

Historical Background
Saint Apollonia lived in Alexandria, Egypt, during a period of violent anti‑Christian riots around 249 AD, during the reign of Emperor Philip the Arab. Much of what we know about her comes from a letter by St. Dionysius of Alexandria, preserved by the historian Eusebius.

During the riots, Christians were seized and tortured. Apollonia, already an elderly consecrated virgin, was targeted because of her faith.
- Her persecutors knocked out or shattered her teeth—a detail that made her one of the most symbolically recognizable martyrs in Christian art.
- They built a bonfire and threatened to burn her alive unless she blasphemed.
- Apollonia leapt willingly into the flames, choosing death rather than renouncing Christ.
Her act was understood not as suicide but as a heroic acceptance of martyrdom under coercion.

- She became one of the most widely invoked saints of the early Church.
- Her cult spread rapidly across both East and West.
- She is often depicted holding a tooth or pincers, referencing her torture.
