St James– 25th July

James the Greater, were preserved by Scripture. James was a member of the Twelve and of the Three; Peter, James, and John were the inner core that formed a shield of fidelity encircling Jesus Christ. James and his brother, John the Evangelist, author of the fourth Gospel, were fishermen who were called from their job on a lake to become fishers of men. It’s possible that other men were called before or after James and John, and that these unknown men laughed in Christ’s face, thought Him crazy, asked a thousand questions first, or just refused to follow a man they did not know and who offered no assurances. Those who said “No” to Christ are lost to history. Christ’s was not an open invitation. He was on a mission and kept walking. There was a moment, and then the moment passed. James and John seized their Christ-moment with both hands and never let go. A moment became forever.

Prayer to Saint James the Apostle

O glorious Apostle, St. James, who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart wast chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony in Gethsemane;
Thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory: obtain for us strength and consolation in the unending warfare of this life, that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus, we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive the victor’s crown in heaven.
Amen.

Gracious God Prayer

Gracious God, we remember before You today Your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that You will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

 ST. JAMES PRAYER

James, man of prayer,
pray that we may listen and respond to God’s call in our lives.
James, holy apostle,
pray that we may be disciples of Jesus in word and action.
James, devoted friend of Jesus,
pray that we may be strong in our devotion to one another
James, the fisherman, patron of laborers,
pray for us in our labors and help those seeking employment
James, witness of the transfiguration of Jesus,
pray that we may see the glory of God revealed in our lives
James, compassionate teacher,
pray that we may serve one another in love.
James, faithful to God’s call,
pray for us in our efforts to live our Catholic faith.
James, comfort of the troubled,
pray for those who are suffering.
James, holy martyr,
pray that we may be prepared to accept our own death
Blessed James, may your inner spirit of peace, good work, discipleship and prayer always be an inspiration to us.
Holy Apostle, walk with us on our journey of faith. May your prayers obtain for us the wisdom to discern God’s call and the strength to endure, so that we may grow in holiness and rejoice in communion with all the saints. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
