Saint Veronica
St. Veronica is a beloved figure in Christian tradition, known for her compassionate act of wiping the face of Jesus as He carried His Cross to Calvary. Though not mentioned by name in the Bible, her story is a powerful and enduring part of Catholic devotion.
HER STORY (TRADITIONAL ACCOUNT)

As Jesus struggled under the weight of the Cross on the way to Golgotha (the Via Dolorosa), Veronica bravely stepped forward from the crowd to wipe the sweat and blood from His face with her veil. According to tradition, Jesus’ image was left imprinted on the cloth—a miraculous “true icon,” which became a sacred relic. This event is commemorated in the Sixth Station of the Cross: “Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.”
SPIRITUAL LESSONS FROM ST. VERONICA
Compassion in action: She didn’t just feel pity—she did something for Christ.
Courage: In a hostile crowd, she risked herself to help Jesus.
True discipleship: She recognized Christ in suffering and ministered to Him.
Devotion to His image: She teaches us to honor Christ’s face in others—especially the suffering. The veil is traditionally believed to have been preserved and venerated in Rome for centuries. It’s sometimes associated with relics kept at St. Peter’s Basilica
The word “Veronica” may have originally referred to the relic itself (“vera icon” = true image), later personified as a saint.
Saint Veronica Prayer to the Sacred Image of Jesus Christ

O My Jesus, Saint Veronica served You on the way to Calvary by wiping Your beloved face with a towel on which Your sacred image then appeared. She protected this treasure, and whenever people touched it, they were miraculously healed. I ask her to pray for the growth of my ability to see Your sacred image in others, to recognize their hurts, to stop and join them on their difficult journeys, and to feel the same compassion for them as she did for You. Show me how to wipe their faces, serve their needs, and heal their wounds, reminding me that as I do this for them, I also do this for You. Saint Veronica, pray for me. Amen.
St. Veronica Novena Prayers
O Saint Veronica, you are remembered today for your tender heart that felt such sorrow upon seeing the bloody and bruised face of Christ as He carried His cross on Good Friday. The last act of affection Jesus received before His arrest turned out to be an instrument of betrayal—a kiss from Judas—but you instead offered the last touch of kindness before His death.
You and Christ shared an intimate moment in the midst of that crowded street, a look that remained on your veil as well as your heart. Help my eyes be opened to see this same look of love Christ gives to me.
Intercede for me and pray especially for the intention I hold in my heart . . .
[Mention your intention].
Lord Jesus Christ, Your servant Veronica wiped Your most holy and precious face, covered with sweat and blood for my sins, transforming her veil into an icon of Your sorrowful and loving gaze. Imprint this image into my very soul and perfect my virtue so that I may be a living icon of You in the world. Your face, Lord, do I seek. Hide not Your face from me.
St. Veronica, pray for us!
Veronica’s Veil: Holy Face Prayer
Eternal Father, We offer You the Holy Face of Jesus, covered with blood, sweat, dust and spittle, in reparation for the crimes of communists, blasphemers, and for the profaners of the Holy Name and of the Holy Day of Sunday. Amen.

May your kindness and generosity inspire me to reach out to others in need and to serve Jesus with all my heart. Amen.

St. Veronica, you gave Christ a towel on His way to Cavalry which He used to wipe the Precious Blood from His Holy Face.
In return for this great act of kindness He left you His most Holy image on the towel. Pray for us to Our Lord that His Holy Face may be imprinted on our hearts so that we may be
always be mindful of the Passion and Death of Our lord Jesus Christ, through the same Christ our Lord, Amen.
Prayer to the Holy Face
O Jesus, who, in Thy cruel Passion didst become the ‘reproach of men and the Man of Sorrows,’ I worship Thy divine Face. Once it shone with the beauty and sweetness of the Divinity; but now, for my sake, it is become as ‘the face of a leper.’ Yet, in that disfigured Countenance, I recognize Thy infinite love, and I am consumed with the desire of making Thee loved by all mankind. The tears that flowed so abundantly from Thy Eyes are to me as precious pearls that I delight to gather, that with their worth I may ransom the souls of poor sinners. O Jesus, whose Face is the sole beauty that ravishes my heart, I may not see here below the sweetness of Thy glance, nor feel the ineffable tenderness of Thy kiss, I bow to Thy Will—but I pray Thee to imprint in me Thy divine likeness, and I implore Thee so to inflame me with Thy love, that it may quickly consume me, and that I may soon reach the vision of Thy glorious Face in heaven. Amen.
Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you accepted a woman’s selfless gesture of love, and in exchange ordained that future generations should remember her by the name of your face. Grant that our works and the works of all who will come after us will make us like unto you and will leave in the world the reflection of your infinite love. To you, O Jesus, splendour of the Father’s glory, be praise and glory forever. Amen.
