Good marriages, Early Christian wife known for partnership in faith

St. Priscilla is a beautiful saint to turn to for a good marriage

Who is St. Priscilla?

St. Priscilla (also called Prisca) appears in the New Testament alongside her husband Aquila. They’re mentioned several times by St. Paul (Acts 18; Romans 16:3–5)

Why she’s great for good marriages

  • Faith-filled marriage: Priscilla and Aquila are always named together — a strong sign of unity and partnership.
  • Teamwork in love: They worked side by side as tentmakers and as missionaries. No competition, just collaboration.
  • Hospitality & prayer: Their home was a house church — marriage as a domestic church at its best.
  • Spiritual leadership: Priscilla helped teach Apollos more fully about the faith (Acts 18:26), showing wisdom, courage, and mutual respect within marriage.

Patronage & devotion

While not officially declared the patron saint of marriage, she’s widely invoked for:

  • Strong Christian marriages
  • Mutual respect between spouses
  • Faith-centered family life
  • Couples working together in ministry

Prayer intention idea

You can pray to St. Priscilla (and St. Aquila) for:

“A marriage rooted in Christ, marked by unity, generosity, faith, and shared purpose.”

St. Priscilla stands out as one of the most influential women of the early Church—an educator, missionary, and martyr whose partnership with Aquila helped shape the first Christian communities. Her feast is celebrated on July 8, and she is remembered for her courage, hospitality, and theological clarity.

Overview of St. Priscilla

  • First‑century Christian missionary who worked closely with St. Paul.
  • Married to Aquila, her constant collaborator in ministry.
  • Renowned for hospitality—their home served as a house‑church.
  • Teacher of the faith who helped instruct Apollos “more accurately” in the Gospel.
  • Venerated as a martyr, though traditions differ on whether she died in Rome or Asia Minor.
  • Feast day: July 8 (Western tradition).

Life and Ministry

Missionary Work

  • Expelled from Rome under Emperor Claudius, Priscilla and Aquila relocated to Corinth, where they met Paul.
  • Traveled with Paul to Ephesus and supported his ministry.
  • Hosted Christian gatherings in their home, strengthening early communities.

Teaching Role

  • Instructed Apollos, a major early evangelist, deepening his understanding of Christian doctrine.
  • Some scholars propose she may have been a presbyter or even the anonymous author of Hebrews—a debated but fascinating tradition.

Martyrdom & Veneration

  • Tradition holds she and Aquila were martyred for refusing to renounce Christ.
  • Patronage (per later devotional tradition): converts, married love, and sometimes trades such as weaving.
