St. Helena, born in Drepanon in Bithynia (later renamed Helenopolis), rose from humble origins to become Augusta of the Roman Empire as the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great. Her life marks a turning point in Christian history: Constantine’s conversion and legalization of Christianity unfolded under her influence, and her own piety became a model for Christian rulers and faithful alike.
Early Life
- Born c. 248 in Asia Minor, likely in Drepanon.
- Traditionally described as of low social status; some accounts suggest she may have begun life as a servant or stable girl.
- Entered a relationship with Constantius Chlorus, with whom she had her son Constantine. Their union ended when Constantius set her aside for political advancement.
Rise to Influence
When Constantine became emperor in 306, he elevated Helena to Empress Dowager. Under his reign she embraced Christianity and became known for her charity, humility, and devotion.
Her influence extended into imperial affairs, including the tragic episode involving Crispus (Constantine’s son) and Fausta (Constantine’s wife). Though the exact details remain historically uncertain, Helena’s grief and involvement are noted in several accounts.
Pilgrimage and the Discovery of the True Cross
Helena’s most enduring legacy is her pilgrimage to the Holy Land around 326–328, during which tradition holds she discovered the True Cross — the cross on which Christ was crucified.
During this journey she:
- Ordered the construction of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
- Commissioned the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
- Promoted Christian worship throughout the empire.
Her discovery became one of the most beloved legends in Christian tradition, inspiring centuries of devotion, art, and literature.
Death and Legacy
