St. Isidore the Farmer, also known as St. Isidore the Laborer (San Isidro Labrador), was a Spanish farmer who lived in Madrid in the 11th–12th century.

Isidore worked as a farm laborer for a wealthy landowner named Juan de Vargas. He was known for his deep prayer life, humility, generosity to the poor, and devotion to the Eucharist.

The Famous Miracle of the Angels

One of the best-known stories about St. Isidore says that he was sometimes criticized for spending too much time in prayer instead of working.

According to tradition, when his master went to see whether Isidore was neglecting his work, he discovered something extraordinary:

Angels were guiding the oxen and plowing the fields while Isidore prayed.

The story illustrates an important lesson of his life: work and prayer are not opposed to one another when both are offered to God.

His Generosity

Another tradition tells of Isidore’s extraordinary generosity toward the poor. Although he was not wealthy himself, he regularly shared his food with those in need.

One famous story says that when Isidore invited poor people to share his meal, there seemed to be enough food for everyone, despite the limited amount available.

What St. Isidore Teaches Us

St. Isidore is particularly meaningful for Catholic families, farmers, workers, and anyone trying to combine faith with ordinary daily work.

His life can be summarized as:

He reminds us that holiness is possible in ordinary work. A person does not need to be a priest, religious, or theologian to become a saint.
