Our Lady of Good Health, also known as Our Lady of Vailankanni, is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with apparitions in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu, India, during the 16th and 17th centuries. The devotion centers around three reported miracles:

First Apparition (16th century): A Hindu shepherd boy named Tamil, delivering buttermilk, encountered a beautiful woman with a child who asked for milk. After giving her some, he found his milk pot miraculously refilled. The woman, identified as Mary and the infant Jesus, appeared again, leading to the renaming of the site as “Matha Kulam” (Our Lady’s Pond)
Second Apparition (late 16th century): Mary appeared to a disabled boy selling buttermilk near Nadu Thittu in Velankanni. She asked for buttermilk for her child and instructed him to deliver a message to a Catholic man in Nagapattinam to build a chapel in her honor. The boy was miraculously healed and could walk, and a thatched chapel was built, dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health
Rescue of Portuguese Sailors (17th century): A Portuguese merchant ship, caught in a violent storm in the Bay of Bengal, was saved after the sailors prayed to Mary, Star of the Sea. They landed safely in Velankanni on September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, and rebuilt the thatched chapel into a stone church.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni, often called the “Lourdes of the East,” was elevated to minor basilica status by Pope John XXIII in 1962. It attracts millions of pilgrims annually, especially during the feast from August 29 to September 8. The Virgin Mary is uniquely depicted wearing an Indian sari, symbolizing cultural integration. The shrine is a significant pilgrimage site for healing and protection, with a novena often prayed for health-related intentions.

Devotion to Our Lady of Good Health extends globally, with churches and shrines dedicated to her in places like Australia, Canada, and India. The devotion emphasizes Mary’s role as a protector and intercessor for health and well-being, often associated with the Rosary and prayers for healing.
