PRAYER TO NOT FALL FOR GREED AND WORKAHOLICS

What Jesus Said About Rich People

1. Wealth Can Become a Spiritual Obstacle

Jesus warned that riches can make it harder to depend on God.
He famously said:

  • “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

This doesn’t mean wealth is evil, but that attachment to wealth can block the heart from God.

2. The Rich Young Ruler

When a wealthy man asked how to inherit eternal life, Jesus told him:

  • “Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor… then come, follow me.”
The man walked away sad because he was very rich.

This shows Jesus wasn’t condemning wealth itself—He was exposing the man’s attachment to it.

3. Zacchaeus: A Positive Example of a Rich Man

Another wealthy man, Zacchaeus, welcomed Jesus joyfully and spontaneously offered to give half his possessions to the poor. Jesus praised him without demanding he sell everything.

This shows Jesus looks at the heart, not the bank account.

4. Jesus Taught Generosity, Not Greed

Jesus repeatedly emphasized:

  • Helping the poor
  • Avoiding self‑indulgence
  • Not storing up earthly treasure
  • Using wealth for mercy and justice

He also said:

  • “You cannot serve God and money.”

The issue is serving money—letting it become a master.

5. Jesus Warned the Rich Against Arrogance and Injustice

Scripture surrounding Jesus’ teachings also warns:

  • Riches can corrode the soul
  • Exploiting workers is condemned
  • Luxury without compassion is spiritually dangerous

In Summary

Jesus did not say that being rich is sinful.
He said that:

  • Loving wealth is dangerous
  • Wealth can make faith harder
  • God expects generosity, humility, and justice
  • The heart matters more than the amount of money

Focus on asking God for help to desire heavenly things over earthly wealth, cultivate generosity, and find contentment in Christ, often invoking Jesus’ poverty and the intercession of saints like St. Lawrence, patron of the poor, to overcome avarice and become better stewards of God’s blessings. Key themes include confessing selfish desires, seeking contentment, and actively practicing giving, as highlighted in prayers

Greed – A Capital Sin

Greed is an excessive pursuit of material goods.

Our lives can be filled with a yearning for material goods. Material objects can block our vision of Christ who told us to give to the poor. This means not only do we give what we have in “excess” but to surrender all of our time, money, and spiritual gifts to those in need.  Charity cures greed by putting the desire to help others above storing up treasure for one’s self.

Saint Anthony of Padua: The Dead Man Without a Heart

Saint Anthony of Padua once preached strongly against greed and attachment to wealth, often quoting Jesus’ words:

“Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Matthew 6:21)

According to tradition, a wealthy and miserly man died in the city. People assumed he was a respectable Christian and prepared his funeral. However, Saint Anthony, inspired by God, made a shocking declaration:

“That man’s heart is not in his body. Go and look in his treasure chest.”

When the people opened the man’s locked strongbox, they found his physical heart inside, among his gold and valuables—while his chest was empty.

Meaning of the Miracle

This miracle was a visible sign of a spiritual truth:

  • The man’s life had been consumed by money
  • His heart belonged not to God or others, but to wealth
  • Greed had replaced love, charity, and trust in God

Saint Anthony used this moment to call people to conversion, reminding them that riches can imprison the soul when they replace God.

Spiritual Lesson

  • Wealth itself is not evil—but attachment to it is
  • True treasure is found in charity, mercy, and love
  • A Christian heart must belong to God, not possessions

Saint Anthony’s story remains one of the Church’s most striking warnings against avarice, and a timeless invitation to choose charity over greed.

Prayers & Themes

  • Prayer for Contentment & Generosity:
    • “O Lord Jesus Christ, Who though Thou wast rich yet for our sakes didst become poor, grant that all overeagerness and covetousness of earthly goods may die in us, and the desire of heavenly things may live and grow in us…” this prayer from praybenedictus.com asks for help to be cheerful givers.
  • Confession & Repentance:
    • Prayers often start with confessing a “greedy heart” or “lust for money and position,” asking for grace to change, and admitting how greed has hurt relationships with God and others
  • Focusing on Jesus’ Example:
    • Invoking Jesus’ poverty, encourages richness in faith, hope, and love rather than material goods.
  • Intercession of Saints:
    • Praying to St. Lawrence (patron of the poor) for generosity within the Church and for the poor is a common practice.
  • Practical Generosity:
    • Generous giving (money, time, encouragement) to the point that it impacts your lifestyle, breaking the grip of greed by actively giving,

Prayer for Generosity and Freedom from Greed (Inspired by St. Lawrence)

“O generous St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr, you who showed the Prefect that the poor were the true treasures of the Church, pray for us!.    We ask you to intercede with God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that the Church may be delivered from the greed and envy of the powerful.  Protect her rights and her property so that she can serve the needy in freedom, giving them spiritual and material good.  Help us to overcome our own worldly desires and the temptation to hoard riches.
May we, like you, recognize that true wealth lies in giving, in serving Christ in the poor, and in seeking the eternal riches of God’s Kingdom.  Obtain for us the grace to be generous stewards of God’s blessings and to find our treasure in heaven, not on earth. Amen”.

Key Themes from St. Lawrence’s Story:

  • True Treasure: The poor and needy are the Church’s real wealth, not gold or silver.
  • Generosity: He dispersed wealth to give to the poor, even selling church vessels.
  • Service: His martyrdom was a final act of service, showing courage in poverty.
  • Intercession: Pray to him for the Church’s freedom to care for the poor and for personal freedom from materialism
