𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 (𝗠𝘁 𝟮𝟱:𝟭𝟰-𝟯𝟬)

What Jesus Said About Rich People

1. Wealth Can Become a Spiritual Obstacle

Jesus warned that riches can make it harder to depend on God.
He famously said:

• “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

This doesn’t mean wealth is evil, but that attachment to wealth can block the heart from God.

2. The Rich Young Ruler

When a wealthy man asked how to inherit eternal life, Jesus told him:

• “Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor… then come, follow me.”
  The man walked away sad because he was very rich.

This shows Jesus wasn’t condemning wealth itself—He was exposing the man’s attachment to it.

3. Zacchaeus: A Positive Example of a Rich Man

Another wealthy man, Zacchaeus, welcomed Jesus joyfully and spontaneously offered to give half his possessions to the poor. Jesus praised him without demanding he sell everything.

This shows Jesus looks at the heart, not the bank account.

4. Jesus Taught Generosity, Not Greed

Jesus repeatedly emphasized:

• Helping the poor
• Avoiding self‑indulgence
• Not storing up earthly treasure
• Using wealth for mercy and justice

He also said:

• “You cannot serve God and money.”

The issue is serving money—letting it become a master.

5. Jesus Warned the Rich Against Arrogance and Injustice

Scripture surrounding Jesus’ teachings also warns:

• Riches can corrode the soul
• Exploiting workers is condemned
• Luxury without compassion is spiritually dangerous

Jesus did not say that being rich is sinful.

Greed – A Capital Sin

Greed is an excessive pursuit of material goods.

Our lives can be filled with a yearning for material goods. Material objects can block our vision of Christ who told us to give to the poor. This means not only do we give what we have in “excess” but to surrender all of our time, money, and spiritual gifts to those in need.  Charity cures greed by putting the desire to help others above storing up treasure for one’s self.

Saint Anthony of Padua: The Dead Man Without a Heart

Saint Anthony of Padua once preached strongly against greed and attachment to wealth, often quoting Jesus’ words:

“Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Matthew 6:21)

According to tradition, a wealthy and miserly man died in the city. People assumed he was a respectable Christian and prepared his funeral. However, Saint Anthony, inspired by God, made a shocking declaration:

“That man’s heart is not in his body. Go and look in his treasure chest.”

When the people opened the man’s locked strongbox, they found his physical heart inside, among his gold and valuables—while his chest was empty.

Meaning of the Miracle

This miracle was a visible sign of a spiritual truth:

• The man’s life had been consumed by money
• His heart belonged not to God or others, but to wealth
• Greed had replaced love, charity, and trust in God

Saint Anthony used this moment to call people to conversion, reminding them that riches can imprison the soul when they replace God.
