Saint Marianne Cope -23rd January

A Sister of St. Francis, Marianne was canonized Oct. 21, 2012. She is the first Franciscan woman from North America to be canonized, and only the 11th American saint.
A woman of great valor, this beloved mother of outcasts, spent her early years in central New York where she served as a leader in the field of health care, education and of her own congregation. Responding to a call to care for the poor sick on the then Sandwich Islands, she devoted 35 years to caring for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease on Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii

Saint Marianne Cope (1838–1918) was a Catholic religious sister best known for her compassionate care of people with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in Hawaiʻi.

Who she was

Born Barbara Koob in Germany; immigrated to the United States as a child.
Became a Franciscan Sister of Syracuse in New York, taking the name Marianne.

Why she’s remembered

In 1883, she volunteered to go to Hawaiʻi when few others would.
She helped run hospitals and later moved to Molokaʻi, caring for patients who were isolated because of their illness.
Known for her kindness, courage, and dignity, she treated patients as people first, not as diseases.
Remarkably, she never contracted Hansen’s disease, despite close, hands-on care.

Sainthood

Beatified in 2005 and canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
She is often remembered as a model of service, bravery, and respect for human dignity.

O God, who called us to serve your Son in the least of our brothers and sisters, grant, we pray, that by the example and intercession of the Virgin Saint Marianne Cope, we may burn with love for you and for those who suffer. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Her care and concern for others manifested the great love you have for us. Through her merits and intercession, grant us the favor which we confidently ask of you so that the people of God, following the inspiration of her life and apostolate, may practice charity towards all according to your word and example.
