St. Rita was a female saint living during the 14th and 15th century in Italy. Although she was married at any early age to an abusive husband, with whom her relationship lasted for more than 18 years, she was a model wife who prayed constantly for her husband. Even after her husband died in a feud, she discouraged her sons from trying to seek revenge. Following their death, Rita entered the convent in Cascia.
Today, St. Rita is known as the patron saint for abused women, mourning wives and impossible causes. Many women turn to her during times of despair, after a death in the family or even after a divorce. She is often depicted in artwork and on medals in a religious sister’s habit, with roses or a rose crown.
Saint Rita of Cascia – 22nd May

Who Was Saint Rita?
Saint Rita of Cascia was born around 1381 in a place called Roccaporena (The exact day of her birth is unknown.). Her baptismal name was Margherita Lotti, from which the name “Rita” is derived. She is unique because she lived faithfully in four different vocations:

Both sons later died, reportedly of illness, before carrying out revenge.
Though deeply painful, Rita accepted these events with faith in God’s providence.
Religious Life
After becoming a widow, Rita sought admission to the:
Order of Saint Augustine

- Deep devotion to Christ Crucified
The Stigmata-Like Wound
One of the most famous events of her life occurred while she was meditating on Christ’s Passion.

- The wound remained for many years.
This painful mark became a sign of her union with the suffering of Jesus.

Novena Prayer to Saint Rita of Cascia
O Holy Patroness of those in need, St. Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors hast been called the Advocate of the HOPELESS and even of the IMPOSSIBLE; St. Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for the Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from Him whatsoever thou askest, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee, expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort; be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favor, to bless and sing thy praises forever. Relying then upon thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray thee grant that (here mention your request).
