St. Christopher is one of the most popular and venerated saints in Christian tradition, especially known as the patron saint of travellers. Though much of what we know about him comes from legend rather than verified historical records, his story has inspired devotion for centuries.
Who Was St. Christopher?
- Name Meaning: “Christopher” comes from the Greek Christophoros, meaning “Christ-bearer.”
- Feast Day: July 25 (Roman Catholic); May 9 (Eastern Orthodox)
- Patron Saint of: Travelers, motorists, sailors, athletes, and bachelors. He’s also invoked against sudden death.
Legend of St. Christopher
According to medieval legend:
- Christopher was a giant of a man who wanted to serve the greatest king in the world.
- After realizing that even the devil feared Christ, Christopher converted to Christianity and sought to serve Christ directly.
- A hermit advised him to serve God by helping travellers cross a dangerous river.
- One day, he carried a small child across, but the child grew heavier and heavier with each step.
- When they reached the other side, the child revealed Himself as Jesus Christ, saying:
“You were bearing not only the whole world but Him who created it.”
This is why St. Christopher is often shown carrying the Christ Child on his shoulder, with a staff in hand.
Spiritual Message
St. Christopher represents faith in action—serving others humbly is a way of serving Christ Himself. He reminds Christians that even the most ordinary tasks (like helping others) can be deeply sacred.

- A strong man wading through water, often with a child on his shoulders and a palm-tree-like staff.
- He’s frequently found in medals, car decals, keychains, and necklaces worn for protection.
Devotion Today
Though he was removed from the universal liturgical calendar by the Vatican in 1969 due to lack of historical evidence, popular devotion to St. Christopher remains strong. He’s widely honoured in travel prayers and is still considered a powerful intercessor for a safe journey.

O Saint Christopher, protector of travellers and guardian of motorists, we turn to you with trust and devotion. You carried Christ on your shoulders through tumultuous waters, guiding travellers safely to shore. Help us, we pray, in our own journeys of life, protect us from the dangers and obstacles that may come our way. Saint Christopher, you who felt the weight of the world on your shoulders as you carried the Christ Child, help us to carry the burdens entrusted to us with courage and determination. May our faith in God give us the strength to overcome life’s challenges and find peace in difficult times. Dear Lord, We appeal to you for strength. Help us choose the vocation set for us. Help us take up our daily burden, as St. Christopher did. Help us navigate the hazards of this life. Grant me, O Lord, a steady hand and watchful eye, that no one shall be hurt as I pass by. You gave life, I pray no act of mine may take away or mar that gift of Thine. Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear my company from the evils of fire and all calamity. Teach me to use my car for others need; nor miss through love of undue speed. The beauty of the world; that thus I may with joy and courtesy go on my way. St. Christopher, holy patron of travelers, protect me and lead me safely to my destiny.
“Life” Prayer
Father, grant that I may be a bearer of Christ Jesus, Your Son. Allow me to warm the often cold, impersonal scene of modern life with Your burning love. Strengthen me by Your Holy Spirit to carry out my mission of changing the world or some definite part of it for the better. Despite my lamentable failures, bring home to me that my advantages are Your blessings to be shared with others. Make me more energetic in setting right what I find wrong with the world instead of complaining about it. Nourish in me a practical desire to build up rather than tear down, to reconcile instead of polarize, to go out on a limb rather than crave security. You learned of the Christian Faith from a holy hermit and set about finding a way to serve God well in your life. Novena to St. Christopher
Almighty and eternal God! With lively faith and reverently worshiping Thy divine Majesty, I prostrate myself before Thee and invoke with filial trust Thy supreme bounty and mercy. Illumine the darkness of my intellect with a ray of Thy heavenly light and inflame my heart with the fire of Thy divine love, that I may contemplate the great virtues and merits of the saint in whose honor I make this novena, and following his example imitate, like him, the life of Thy divine Son.
