The “Apostles of the Latter Times”
One of his most famous ideas is that near the end of history, God will raise up:
- A group he calls the “apostles of the latter times”
- People deeply devoted to Mary
- Missionaries who will renew the Church and combat evil
He describes them as:
- Spiritually strong and fearless
- Detached from worldly things
- Completely dedicated to Christ through Mary
This appears especially in True Devotion to Mary (sections ~46–59).
The role of Mary in the end times
De Montfort believed that Mary’s role would become more visible toward the end of history:
- Devotion to Mary would increase
- She would help form saints to oppose evil
- She leads souls more perfectly to Christ
This idea is sometimes summarized as:
“In the latter times, Mary must shine forth more than ever.”
Spiritual battle, not date-setting
Unlike many modern “end times” theories:
- He does NOT predict dates or timelines
- He focuses on a spiritual struggle between good and evil
- The emphasis is on holiness, not speculation
His vision aligns with broader Catholic teaching about:
- Ongoing spiritual warfare
- The eventual triumph of Christ
Connection to Marian consecration
His end-times spirituality ties directly to his famous teaching on:
- Total consecration to Jesus through Mary
- Living as a “slave of love” to Christ
He believed this devotion would be especially important in difficult future times.
