Father’s Day – June 21st 2026

Father’s Day – 21st June 2026

Father’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, guardians, and all men who exercise fatherly care and responsibility. While it is primarily a civil celebration rather than a liturgical feast of the Catholic Church, Catholics often observe it by giving thanks to God for the gift of fathers and praying for them.

In many countries, including the United States, the Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

In 2026, Father’s Day is celebrated on 21st June, 2026

Significance of Father’s Day in Catholic Teaching

The Catholic understanding of fatherhood is rooted in God Himself. Jesus taught His disciples to pray:

“Our Father, who art in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9)

This reveals God as the perfect Father and earthly fathers as reflections of His love.

Father’s Day highlights:

1. The Gift of Fatherhood : Fathers participate in God’s work of creation and nurturing life.

2. Spiritual Leadership: Fathers are called to lead their families in faith, prayer, and virtue.

3. Sacrificial Love: A father is called to imitate Christ through self-giving love and service.

4. Protection and Guidance: Fathers are entrusted with caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of their families.

Biblical Foundations

Several biblical figures illustrate fatherhood:

Saint Joseph

The greatest model of fatherhood in Catholic tradition.

  • Protector of Jesus and Mary
  • Faithful and obedient to God
  • Humble worker
  • Guardian of the Holy Family

Abraham

Abraham

Known as the “Father of Faith” because of his trust in God.

The Prodigal Son’s Father

Father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son

Represents God’s mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

For Catholics, Father’s Day often has a special connection to St. Joseph.

The Church honors him as:

  • Patron of fathers
  • Patron of families
  • Patron of workers
  • Protector of the Church

Many Catholic families pray for fathers through the intercession of St. Joseph on Father’s Day.

Qualities of a Catholic Father

The Church encourages fathers to cultivate:

  • Faith
  • Love
  • Integrity
  • Patience
  • Responsibility
  • Courage
  • Humility
  • Prayerfulness
  • Generosity
  • Forgiveness

A Catholic father is called to be both a provider and a spiritual guide.

How Catholics Celebrate Father’s Day

At Church

  • Offering Masses for living and deceased fathers
  • Special blessings for fathers
  • Prayers of thanksgiving

At Home

  • Family meals and celebrations
  • Giving gifts and cards
  • Sharing memories
  • Family prayer

Acts of Charity

Some families honor fathers by helping the poor or supporting charitable causes.

Remembering Deceased Fathers

Father’s Day is also a time to pray for fathers who have died. Catholics often:

  • Request Mass intentions
  • Visit cemeteries
  • Pray the Rosary
  • Offer prayers for the repose of their souls

This reflects the Church’s belief in the Communion of Saints and the importance of praying for the faithful departed.

Key Message of Father’s Day

Father’s Day reminds Catholics to:

  • Thank God for the gift of fathers.
  • Pray for fathers and father figures.
  • Honor the sacrifices fathers make.
  • Support men in their vocation of fatherhood.
  • Look to St. Joseph as a model of faithful fatherhood.
  • Remember both living and deceased fathers with gratitude and prayer.

“The first duty of a father is to pray for his children and to lead them to God by example.”

“A good father seeks not only to provide for his children but to guide their hearts toward eternal truths.”

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”

“Fathers, does not provoke children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

A Prayer for Christian Fathers

Heavenly Father,
you entrusted your Son Jesus,
the child of Mary,
to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.
Bless all fathers
as they care for their families.
Give them strength and wisdom,
tenderness and patience.
Support them in the work they have to do,
protecting those who look to them,
as we look to you for love and salvation,
through Jesus Christ our rock and defender.

A Prayer about Fathers

Our Father in heaven, you have made yourself known to us through Jesus Christ and have invited us to pray to you as our Father, that we may pray boldly and confidently to you.
We pray for fathers. Give them wisdom. Give them patience. Give them the ability to love in a way that reflects your love.
We pray for children. Give them guidance. Give them a spirit of obedience. Give them warmth, comfort, and peace in their fathers’ homes.
We pray for the fatherless and those who struggle in their families. Be their Father when earthly fathers fail. Show them love and guidance, and help them to know a father’s love through your love, providence, and care.
Use Christian friends and other families to encourage and guide, nurture and instruct, and bless them with your peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

For the Distant Father

Dear Lord, Help me to love my dad in a way that would bring honor to You and him. Help me to see beyond the external differences and into his eternal realm. Help me to live out “Love never fails” with my dad.
Amen.

A Father’s Day Prayer of Hope

Dear God, We thank you for the gift of Dads in this life. We thank you that you are the greatest Dad ever, Abba Father, and we know that you cover us in your great love.
We pray for your blessing, favor, and strength over every Dad in this world, for those who are seeking to walk closely with you in a dark world, and for those who just need to be reminded that you are real. We ask for your renewed courage, for your boldness, for your Spirit to fill them. Make them always aware and alert of the schemes of the enemy. We ask that you would keep their footsteps firm, and guard their way. We ask that you would help them to always stand strong, to be men of faith, to say “no” to what is wrong, and to say “yes” to what is right. We ask that you would fill their hearts with love, compassion, joy, faithfulness, and cover their lives with great peace.
Lord, we pray that you would raise up mighty men, godly men, in this generation, those who would know and honor you with their entire lives. We pray that they would stand firm in the faith, walk wisely, and follow hard after you. May they grow in their love and passion for you, for their families, and in the calling to follow you above all else. Thank you for dads who fight for their families, who do battle in prayer over those they love.
Thank you, God, that your Word is true. We hold fast to you today, we choose to immerse our lives in your Truth. We know that you are with us always and cover us in your power and strength.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Father’s Day Prayer

(a prayer for all father’s, suitable for use in a church service or meeting)
Lord, thank you for all fathers. For the new ones, who endure sleepless nights with infants in arms. For the busy ones, who juggle the pressures of home and family life. For the steadfast ones, who nurture and care for our special vulnerable children. For the patient ones, who always seek to forgive and engage with their pre-teens. For the persistent ones, who cleverly find new ways to connect with their mini-adults. For the father uncles, who step in to cradle and care for nieces and nephews. For all granddads, who love and support their precious grandchildren. For the foster dads that are called to gather and cover the fragile ones. For the Sunday dads who care for our children and lead them in faith. For the dads who give far beyond their own resources, who overcome disability to cherish and love. Thank you, Lord, for all our beautiful fathers. Help us to support them and keep them in our prayers. May you bless them now on this their special day.
Amen.

Fathers in Our Lives

We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives.
Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail.
We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed.
This Father’s Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways–both big and small–they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach.
So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches and the women of our families.
For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You.
In Your Holy name, O God, we pray.
Amen.

Bless Our Fathers

Heavenly Father,
Today we ask You to bless our earthly fathers
for the many times they reflected the love, strength, generosity, wisdom and mercy that You exemplify in Your relationship with us, Your children.

We honor our fathers for putting our needs above their own convenience and comfort;
for teaching us to show courage and determination in the face of adversity;
for challenging us to move beyond self-limiting boundaries;
for modeling the qualities that would turn us into responsible, principled, caring adults.

Not all our fathers lived up to these ideals.
Give them the grace to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes.
Give us the grace to extend to them the same forgiveness that you offer us all.
Help us to resist the urge to stay stuck in past bitterness,
instead, moving forward with humility and peace of heart.

We ask your blessing on those men who served
as father figures in our lives
when our biological fathers weren’t able to do so.
May the love and selflessness they showed us
be returned to them in all their relationships,
and help them to know that their influence
has changed us for the better.

Give new and future fathers the guidance they need
to raise happy and holy children,
grounded in a love for God and other people –
and remind these fathers that treating their wives
with dignity, compassion and respect is
one of the greatest gifts they can give their children.

We pray that our fathers who have passed into the next life
have been welcomed into Your loving embrace,
and that our family will one be day be reunited in your heavenly kingdom.

In union with St. Joseph,
whom you entrusted with Your Son,
we ask Your generous blessings today and every day.

Amen.

Praise Those Fathers

Let us praise those fathers who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice.

Let us praise those fathers who, lacking a good model for a father, have worked to become a worthy and virtuous father.

Let us praise those fathers who, by their own account, were not always there for their children, but who continue to offer those children, now grown, their love and support. As well, let us pray for those fathers who have been wounded by words and actions of their children.

Let us praise those fathers who, despite marital discord, have remained in their children’s lives.
Let us praise those fathers whose children are adopted, and whose love and support has nurtured a thriving life.
Let us praise those fathers who, as stepfathers, freely choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their step children’s love and respect.
Let us praise those fathers who have lost a child to death, and continue to hold the child in their heart.
Let us praise those men who have no children, but cherish the next generation as if they were their own.

Let us praise those men who have “fathered” us in their role as mentors and guides.

Let us praise those men who are about to become fathers; may they openly delight in their children.
And let us praise those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
