Catholic Teaching on the Poor

The Churchโ€™s Enduring Commitment to the Least of Our Brothers and Sisters

1. The Poor in Sacred Scripture

Care for the poor is woven throughout the entire biblical tradition. God reveals Himself as the defender of the vulnerable, and He commands His people to act with justice and mercy.

  • โ€œYou shall not oppress the poor or vulnerable. God will hear their cry.โ€ย (Ex 22:20โ€“26)
  • A portion of the harvest is set aside for the poor and the stranger.ย (Lev 19:9โ€“10)
  • โ€œSpeak out in defense of the poor.โ€ย (Prov 31:8โ€“9)
  • โ€œBlessed are the poor, theirs is the kingdom of God.โ€ย (Lk 6:20โ€“23)
  • In the Last Judgment, Christ identifies Himself with the poor:ย โ€œWhat you do for the least among you, you do for Me.โ€ย (Mt 25:34โ€“40)

Jesusโ€™ mission is explicitly directed toward the poor:ย โ€œHe has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.โ€ย (Lk 4:16โ€“21)

2. The Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Catechism teaches that love for the poor is not optionalโ€”it is a constitutive part of Christian life.

a. God blesses those who aid the poor

โ€œGod blesses those who come to the aid of the poor and rebukes those who turn away from them.โ€ (CCC 2443)

b. The Churchโ€™s love for the poor is constant

โ€œThe Churchโ€™s love for the poor is a part of her constant tradition.โ€ (CCC 2444)

c. Poverty includes more than material need

This love extends to โ€œmany forms of cultural and religious poverty.โ€ (CCC 2444)

d. Misuse of wealth contradicts the Gospel

Love for the poor is โ€œincompatible with immoderate love of riches or their selfish use.โ€ (CCC 2445)

e. Justice comes before charity

St. John Chrysostom is quoted:ย โ€œNot to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them.โ€ย (CCC 2446) The Catechism adds: โ€œWhen we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours.โ€ (CCC 2446) VaticanVatican. VI. Love For The Poor

f. Works of mercy

The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are central expressions of Christian charity (CCC 2447).

3. The Churchโ€™s Social Doctrine

The Churchโ€™s social teaching provides principles for reflection, criteria for judgment, and guidelines for action.

a. Human dignity and the common good

Christian revelation โ€œpromotes deeper understanding of the laws of social living.โ€ (CCC 2419) The Church teaches the demands of justice and peace in conformity with divine wisdom.

b. Moral judgment in social matters

The Church intervenes when โ€œfundamental rights of the person or the salvation of souls requires it.โ€ (CCC 2420)

c. Preferential option for the poor

A basic moral test is how society treats its most vulnerable members. The Church insists that the needs of the poor must come first.

d. Economic systems must respect the human person

Any system that makes profit the exclusive norm of economic activity is โ€œmorally unacceptable.โ€ (CCC 2424)

e. The poor must be agents, not merely recipients

Pope Francis emphasizes that social policies must beย withย the poor andย ofย the poor, not merely โ€œforโ€ them.

4. The Preferential Option for the Poor

This principle is foundational in Catholic social teaching:

  • The poor have aย special claimย on the conscience of believers.
  • The option for the poor is not ideological; it isย Christologicalโ€”rooted in Jesusโ€™ identification with the least.
  • It demands personal charity, structural justice, and social solidarity.

The option for the poor is a call to conversion: to see Christ in the suffering, to share our goods, and to work for a society where every personโ€™s dignity is upheld.

5. Practical Implications for Parish Life

A parish faithful to Catholic teaching on the poor will:

  • Promote the corporal and spiritual works of mercy
  • Support charitable outreach and social justice ministries
  • Advocate for the dignity of the vulnerable
  • Foster a spirit of generosity and simplicity
  • Encourage parishioners to encounter Christ in the poor
  • Ensure that the poor are welcomed, heard, and included in parish life

This commitment is not an optional ministryโ€”it is a defining mark of the Churchโ€™s identity.

Conclusion

Catholic teaching on the poor is rooted in Scripture, affirmed in the Catechism, and developed in the Churchโ€™s social doctrine. It calls every Christian to recognize Christ in the least of our brothers and sisters and to respond with justice, mercy, and love. To serve the poor is to serve Christ Himself.

Opening Prayer

Generous God, we lift up to your mercy that poverty which is a moral and social wound upon our countryโ€™s soul. In your goodness, help us to heal this wound by working to alleviate the suffering and pain of the poor. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 10: 12-14, 16-18

R. Rise up, LORD! Do not forget the poor.

Rise up, LORD! God, lift up your hand! Do not forget the poor! Why should the wicked scorn God, say in their hearts, โ€œGod does not careโ€? R.

But you do see; you take note of misery and sorrow; you take the matter in hand. R.

To you the helpless can entrust their cause; you are the defender of orphans. R..

The LORD is king forever; the nations have vanished from his land. R.

You listen, LORD, to the needs of the poor; you strengthen their heart and incline your ear. R.

You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed; no one on earth will cause terror again. R.

Petitions

We lift up the following needs, saying: โ€œGenerous God, hear our prayer.โ€

Give the church the grace to be a โ€œpoor church for the poor,โ€ and so become an even greater sign to the world of Christโ€™s charity for the least and those in need, we pray:

Give the people of our nation the collective will to make the economic, social, and political choices to reverse the human- made disaster of poverty, and so offer a new vision of life and society, we pray:

Give those in elected office the conviction and courage to promote social policies and economic structures which reduce poverty and promote a just distribution of the worldโ€™s goods, we pray: Give those who struggle with poverty renewed hope, economic and educational opportunity, and dignified work in safe conditions for just wages, that they might live in economic security, we pray: Give us open hearts that we might willingly share our gifts with others, follow Jesus in his own poverty, and seek his face in the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters,ย we pray: Give to Catholic Charities and other organizations of good will the leadership and resources needed to reduce poverty in the communities they serve, we pray: Other intercessions may be offered here. Our Fatherโ€ฆ

Closing Prayer

God of bounty, your son Jesus embraced poverty and taught that the poor are blessed, for โ€œtheirs is the kingdom of God.โ€ Help us to step out of our certainties and comforts and keep our eyes fixed on him, so we can both see and serve him in the faces of the poor. Amen.

Prayer for the Poor

God of Justice, open our eyes to see you in the face of the poor. Open our ears to hear you in the cries of the exploited. Open our mouths to defend you in the public squares as well as in private deeds. Remind us that what we do to the least ones, we do to you. Amen.

Prayer for the poor and needy

Lord God, You came to give honour to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged.

You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued.

You came to give a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute. Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries.

Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance. Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need.

Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them. You came for the least, the lost and last of this world.

Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

A Prayer for the Sick Poor

Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am in distress; affliction is wearing down my eyes, my throat and my insides. My life is worn out by sorrow, and my years by sighing. My strength fails in my affliction; my bones are wearing down. But I trust in you, Lord; I say, โ€œYou are my God.โ€ PSALM 31:10-11, 15

O GOD, DEFENDER OF THE POOR AND OPPRESSED

we pray for the sick poor in our midst, whose dignity is often assaulted and who can be so vulnerable โ€” or even forgotten โ€” in being able to get adequate health care. O God, give them comfort in their sickness. Help us to hear their cries and come to their aid. Teach us to see with your eyes their tremendous dignity and to care for them as you care. Let us see in them your face, that through our solidarity with them they may experience your compassion, concern and love. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN.

Prayer for the Poor

Let us pray for the poor, hungry, and neglected all over the world, that their cries for daily bread may inspire works of compassion and mercy among those to whom much has been given.

Let us pray for the farmers with limited or marginal land throughout the world, for those who lack access to water and other resources, and for the light of research and support services to shine in the lives of all Godโ€™s people.

Let us pray for the health of women, children, and families around the world, especially for an end to maternal and child mortality, that in building healthy families, all Godโ€™s people may be empowered to strengthen their communities and repair the breaches which divide nations and peoples.

Let us pray for an end to the waste and desecration of Godโ€™s creation, for access to the fruits of creation to be shared equally among all people, and for communities and nations to find sustenance in the fruits of the earth and the water God has given us.

Let us pray for all nations and people who already enjoy the abundance of creation and the blessings of prosperity, that their hearts may be lifted up to the needs of the poor and afflicted, and partnerships between rich and poor for the reconciliation of the world may flourish and grow.

Lord, hear our prayer.

โœ Prayer For The Poor โœ

O God, look upon the poverty of our hearts with compassion and love. Enable us to give lovingly and freely of our possessions and gifts. May those who work with the poor and needy receive joy in this life and fullness of life forever. This we ask through the intercession of all the saints, especially of those whose legacy of service we carry on today. Grant that we may be faithful as they were faithful so that we too may live with you forever. Amen.
