St. John Baptist de La Salle (1651–1719)

Patron Saint of:
Teachers
Students
Catholic Schools
Education Reform
Who He Was
He was a French priest who saw that many children, especially the poor, were not being educated. Schools at the time were expensive, disorganized, and only for the wealthy. De La Salle changed that.
What He Did
He:
Started the first free schools for poor boys.
Trained teachers and founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the Christian Brothers).
Introduced classroom teaching (instead of tutoring one student at a time, which was the custom).
Encouraged teaching in the everyday language of the students, not only in Latin.
Formed the foundations of modern classroom education.
His Spirit
He believed every young person has dignity, no matter their background.
His famous guidance to teachers:
“Teach them with gentleness and from the heart.”
He worked quietly, humbly, and with great patience, even when misunderstood.
His life is a model for teachers who serve not for recognition, but for the growth of others.
